Movies About Journeys
Don’t we all wish we could take a nice, long trip right about now? Here are some movies about journeys that are exciting, fun, harrowing, or anything in between.
Harr Pick: MIDNIGHT RUN (1988)
Where to watch: Available to stream on HBO MAX
Category: Comedy/Exciting!
I feel like MIDNIGHT RUN used to be talked about all the time. Then, at some point, it fell off people’s radar. This is a downright dirty shame. This is one of those “total package” movies. There’s laughs, excitement, action, and most importantly, great characters with great character arcs. Robert De Niro’s Jack Walsh & Charles Grodin’s Jonathan “The Duke” Mardukas are two of the all-time great buddy pairs in cinema. Simply outstanding chemistry. Lightning in a bottle. Watching De Niro track down, capture, and transport Grodin across the US is an utter joy. If you have never seen MIDNIGHT RUN it’s sure to give you a dose of cinematic goodness. —Harrison
Harr Pick: THE WAGES OF FEAR (1953)
Where to watch: Available to stream on HBO MAX and The Criterion Channel
Category: Exciting! (Like heart-stopping exciting.)
THE WAGES OF FEAR has one of the most suspenseful-sounding premises on paper. The actual movie is 100x time more nail-biting tense. Four destitute men in a third world country are hired to deliver trucks full of nitroglycerine to an oil field that is on fire. The only way to stop the fire is to blow it up and cap the oil well. The four men are divided between two trucks and have to traverse an incredibly dangerous route to get to the oil field. Once the journey starts you barely have any time to catch your breath as you watch these trucks drive through narrow switchbacks and shaky bridges. THE WAGES OF FEAR was loosely remade in 1977 as SORCERER, btw. —Harrison
Harr Pick: DEATH RACE 2000 (1975)
Where to watch: Available to stream on Tubi.
Category: Weird & Wild
Ahhhh, DEATH RACE 2000. Produced by B-movie living legend, Roger Corman, DEATH RACE 2000 is about a cross country rally race in which racers gain points by running over and killing people as the trek across the United States. All the contestants in the race have outlandish and wonderful personalities and vehicles, not unlike the cartoon WACKY RACES. The hero of the movie is David Carradine (Bill from KILL BILL) as Frankenstein, a racer who is clad in S&M leather gimp suit. This is one of Sylvester Stallone’s first movies as the brash Italian-American caricature. Oh there’s also a subplot about resistance fighters working to overthrow the corrupt government. —Harrison
Through a difference lens, this movie is a ~90 minute setup to one of the best one-liners/dad jokes of all time. —Ben
Ben Pick: What Dreams May Come (1998)
Where to watch: Amazon Prime
Category: Drama/Human Interest
A beautiful movie both visually and thematically that track’s Robin William’s character traversing the afterlife to be reunited with his wife. A bit clunky in places and the visual effects are somewhat dated, worth a watch if you’re in the mood for something a bit deeper. —Ben
Ben Pick: Your Highness (2011)
Where to watch: Amazon Prime
Category: Comedy
This movie didn’t get much love when it came out and I think that’s a shame. I’m biased toward all things Danny McBride and this movie is no exception. It’s a “stoner movie” where there is a loose story tied together by a series of jokes and gags (that largely all work for me). Worth a watch if you’re in the mood to watch Franco and McBride bicker and try to one-up each other in medieval times. —Ben
Love, love, love this one. There are certain comedy movies I remember not for the jokes themselves, but for my reaction to them. I remember a few jokes in this movie legit made me double over with laughter to the point that I couldn’t catch my breath. Fun fact: YOUR HIGHNESS was released just over a week prior to GAME OF THRONES’ first episode.—Harrison
Ben Pick: Stretch (2014)
Where to watch: Amazon Prime
Category: Exciting!/Comedy
The path in this movie is less linear and well-defined as the other movies we’ve recommended, but after finishing it, I hope you’ll agree that it was quite a journey. With a star-studded cast and a very fun cameo, STRETCH is a fast-paced and fun adventure. A great airplane movie or something you watch on a Friday night to wind down. —Ben
Thank you, Ben, for recommending this one! I completely forgot about it. This movie is a blast and features a totally unhinged performance by Chris Pine. It was directed by Joe Carnahan who has a knack for creating outlandish, high-energy movies like SMOKIN’ ACES & THE A-TEAM. —Harrison
